How to Camouflage Cracked Paint in Bathrooms

Many people paint their bathrooms again and again, only to watch their carefully crafted paint jobs peel away due to improper ventilation and a buildup of moisture in the bathroom. Ideally, bathrooms require remodeling to improve the airflow and to ensure that the structure meets building code. However, this is not always financially practical. In the meantime, choose a decorative painting technique for the walls of your bathroom that will hide the peeling surface. This technique, called crackling, will ensure that the unintentional damage is indistinguishable from the crackled surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Line the separation between the walls and the floor and the walls and the ceiling with painter's tape. Protect the molding around windows and doorways with painter's tape, as well. Remove all of the portable items from the room and cover the floors with plastic tarps.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove light switch plates and cover the switch itself completely with painter's tape. Wrap immovable structures like vanities, toilets and tubs in newspaper secured with masking tape. Wrap separate fixtures entirely with painter's tape and masking paper.

    • 3

Ventilate the room as much as possible. Open any available windows and position an oscillating fan at the doorway. The fan will pull the air out of the room and cycle it into the larger area, allowing new, fresh air to enter the bathroom as you work.

    • 4

Scrape away existing peeling paint with a paint scraper held at a 45-degree angle. Wash the walls from the bottom to the top with an all-purpose household cleaner and a sponge. Wipe each wall afterward with a damp towel and let all of the walls dry completely.

    • 5

Paint each wall with the base coat using a low-nap paint roller. Let the paint dry 24 hours. For a dark paint job, use a base coat in a light, neutral color. If you want lighter walls, use a darker, neutral color as your base.

    • 6

Apply liquid hide glue over all of the walls. Roll the glue on in straight, even lines using a clean paint roller. For large chips, use a thick coat of glue; roll the glue on thinly for smaller chips.

    • 7

Wait a full day. Paint the top coat onto the bathroom walls, again with a clean roller. This color will be the overall impression of your walls, so use a light shade for light walls and a dark shade for dark walls.

    • 8

Let the paint sit untouched for 24 hours. After this period, your crackle finish will be complete. Remove all of the tape and coverings from the bathroom and replace the switch covers.
