How to: Faux Concrete

With the economic downturn, many people have scaled back on pricey remodeling projects.

More families are on the search for budget-conscious, practical ways to spruce up their homes. Faux finishing is one means of doing just that. Faux finishing can vary in material, type, size, technique and application and is much less expensive than using stone or brick. Though there are many patterns and styles of faux concrete, the basics of the application are easy to learn.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic drop covers
  • Paint tape
  • Designer floor finish -- 10-pound bag
  • Water
  • 10-gallon bucket
  • Stirring stick
  • Drywall knife
  • Paint pan
  • Trowel

Instructions

    • 1

      Lay out the plastic drop cloth to protect surrounding areas from splatter or spill. Secure the plastic in place with paint tape.

      Pour 1/3 of floor finish mix into the bucket. Add water according to specifications on the package.

      Stir the water and mix until it has the consistency of pancake batter.

      Pour the mix into the paint pan.

      Apply a generous amount of the mixture to the surface area with the trowel or drywall knife. Apply the mixture from top to bottom or bottom to top.

      Allow the surface area to dry overnight. Seal the mixture container so that it does not dry out.

      Apply a second coat of the mixture to the surface area. Allow several hours for the mixture to cure. It will lighten in color as it dries. Curing time will vary by environment due to differences in humidity, heat, dampness, etc.
