How to Make Walls Look Cracked

Plain walls can be dull and boring. Faux finishes help add movement and texture to a wall. Make your wall a feature within the room by faux painting cracks on it. The faux-painted cracks will add a distressed appearance and create texture for the light to fall on. Achieve the appearance of cracks in the wall with crackle medium and careful painting with a small craft paintbrush. Take your time to plan out the appearance of the cracks so that it will enhance the overall appearance of the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the cracks onto the wall with a pencil to create the cracked design that you want to achieve with the faux painting technique.

    • 2

Paint over the pencil lines carefully with burnt umber craft paint using a small craft paintbrush. This will represent the depth of the cracks in the wall. The dark color of the burnt umber will show through the crackled wall finish.

    • 3

Allow the burnt umber craft paint to dry until it is tacky. Brush crackle medium over the burnt umber lines with the small craft paintbrush. Allow the crackle medium to become dry to the touch.

    • 4

Paint over the crackle medium and burnt umber lines with wall paint using a paintbrush. The paint will crackle in the areas where the wall is to appear cracked. The crackled paint will reveal the dark umber crack lines in the wall.
