DIY Antiquing for White Furniture

A piece of white furniture gives any room a crisp, fresh look. If you are going for a vintage or shabby-chic look, however, the crisp look may be far from the effect you desire. You can easily give your new white furniture an antiqued, lived-in look with sandpaper, steel wool, a hammer, chains, and many other household items. After you've spent time giving the piece an aged look, apply a coat of furniture wax to ensure your hard work is protected from spills, chips and dings.

    • 2

Place a piece of 120-grit sandpaper in an orbital sander. Sand the edges, corners and raised and bumpy areas of the furniture piece that would normally get worn with everyday wear and tear. Repeat on the drawers.

    • 3

Sand any areas by hand that you couldn't reach with the orbital sander with a piece of 120-grit sandpaper until the edges, corners and raised and bumpy areas have a level of wear that you desire.

    • 4

Rub the painted surface of your furniture and the drawers with the steel wool to give it a slightly scratched, worn look. Distress the corners, edges and sides of the piece and its drawers by hitting it with a chain and a hammer to give it dings and dents it would get during a lifetime of normal use. Use a utility knife to peel away paint on the corners or edges to give it an old, worn look.

Apply paste wax to the entire piece to give it an aged look and to protect it from spills and other elements. Apply the wax to small sections at a time with a paint brush. Buff the wax into the piece with a clean rag to give it a nice shine and an aged patina. Reapply the wax in small sections until you have the aged look that you desire. Let the wax dry.
