DIY Decorative Stone Look on Wall Panels

Wall panels come in a variety of colors, designs and textures. Unless the panels you are working with are smooth-textured wall panels, you will need to prepare the panels before you can create a decorative stone look. Once the preparation is completed, plan your stone color and design. Use glaze paints and sponges to make a faux stone appearance on wall panels.

Instructions

  1. Wall Panel Preparation

    • 1

Clean the walls with soap and water to remove any ground-in dirt or grease.

    • 2

Cover the floor with drop cloths. Tape the baseboards and around any windows or doors with painter's tape.

    • 3

Sand the wood wall panels to prepare the surfaces to receive the paint. If your panels are not made of wood, you don’t need to worry about sanding.

    • 4

Prime the walls with wall primer. The primer helps paint bond to the paneling.

    Create the Decorative Stone Look

    • 5

Paint the panels in textured stone paint using a textured paint roller. This color provides the background for the stone look and the textured “grout” for the stonework. Let the paint dry several hours or overnight.

    • 6

Create grout lines by outlining the shape of medium-size stones with painter's tape on the walls. Use a sporadic pattern, rather than straight lines, to emulate stone walls.

    • 7

Pour a small amount of dark or taupe glaze paint onto a plastic plate or paint tray. This makes using the paint easier. Dip the edge of a paint sponge into the dark or taupe glaze paint. Dab the paint just inside the grout lines. Leave the insides of the stones alone.

    • 8

Pour a small amount of the light stone-colored glaze onto a plastic plate or into a paint tray. Add a small amount of light glaze to the edge of a paint sponge. Apply the paint to the insides of the stones using a dabbing motion.

    • 9

Spread the light glaze paint with the sponge by lightly dabbing the sponge toward the edge of the stone and over the dark glaze to blend the two colors. Let the stones dry overnight and remove the painter's tape.
