How to Faux Stone a Concrete Outside Floor

Creating faux stone-textured concrete is an inexpensive way for a homeowner or do-it-yourselfer to fix a worn walkway, driveway or patio. The technique of painting faux stone, marble or flagstone is time consuming, but it does eliminate the need to demolish or tear out heavy concrete. One of the advantages of painting your outdoor concrete floor is that it can last for years and repair is relatively easy — you will just need to repaint the area.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Floor

    • 1

Clean the concrete floor of all debris by first sweeping the entire surface.

    • 2

Use a sander and 80-grit sandpaper to remove any bumpy material or old paint on the concrete. Sand the surface until smooth.

    • 3

Use kitty litter to soak up fresh oil spots and commercial adhesive remover for any sticky substances like gum, glue or tape.

    • 4

Apply a cement repair solution to fix any cracks or holes in the concrete.

    • 5

Spead trisodium phosphate on the concrete. TSP removes harsh stains and acts as a degreaser for especially tough oil and grease stains. Wet the concrete floor and sprinkle stain locations with TSP. Let the TSP soak for 30 minutes, then scrub the area with a stiff broom. Clean the area by rinsing with warm water. Repeat the rinsing process as necessary.

    • 6

Allow concrete floor to dry for three or more days.

    • 7

Coat the concrete. Apply a primer or stain blocker to the concrete floor. Roll two coats of primer over the entire floor and let dry completely.

    Creating faux stone

    • 8

Paint the entire concrete floor with white latex paint.

    • 9

Lay out the shapes for the stone pattern. For instance, to incorporate a flagstone design, use painter’s tape to create different sizes of faux stone on the concrete.

    • 10

Apply your base color. For example, use gray paint for flagstone.

    • 11

Paint the concrete using a paint roller or brush. You can paint over the tape.

    • 12

Dab a sea sponge in areas to give your stone an earthy texture.

    • 13

Let the floor dry completely before removing the painter’s tape.

    • 14

Remove all the tape to revile your designed faux flag stone floor. The white latex paint represents the mortar between the stone.

    • 15

Finish your concrete floor by applying two coats of polyurethane to give the floor lasting protection and shine.
