How to Paint Faux Brick Backsplash

A special backsplash is an attractive feature in many kitchens and draws attention to the counter area. Exposed brick can be expensive if you use the real thing, but can be simulated in paint for a fraction of the cost. A faux brick backsplash requires only four colors and is basic enough that you can accomplish it even if you don't have a background in art or interior design. If you try the backsplash and don't like it, you can just paint over it again.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the counter and put them somewhere safe.

    • 2

Mask off the edge of the counter, the underside of your cabinets and any other areas that you do not want painted with blue painter's tape.

    • 3

Apply a coat of primer to the backsplash area using a paintbrush or roller and allow it to dry. If the wall is already white, you can skip this step.

    • 4

Apply a coat of eggshell or light-tan paint to the backspash area. This paint will be for the mortar seen between the bricks. Allow it to dry to the touch.

    • 5

Apply a darker shade of mortar paint to the backsplash using a fine sea sponge, blotting the paint randomly in place to create a mottled texture. Keep this texture delicate.

    • 6

Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Apply 1/2-inch strips of painter's tape to the backsplash in a brick pattern. The tape will protect the mortar lines while you paint in the bricks.

    • 8

Apply a coat of brick-colored paint onto the backsplash. You can use red, tan, brown or any other color that you want. Allow this coat to dry to the touch.

    • 9

Apply a darker brick color with a coarse sea sponge, creating a mottled texture similar to that of the mortar.

    • 10

Remove the painter's tape that is protecting the mortar before the brick paint dries fully. If you wait too long, the tape may pull up the edges of the brick paint.

    • 11

Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours to completely set.
