How to Make Furniture Look White Washed

When refinishing a piece of furniture, you will first need to decide what type of finish you want. White washed finish describes a solution of lime, water and whiting that gives wood a white finish. You can refinish wood furniture or apply white washed finish to new, unfinished pieces of furniture using white wash stain.

  • Orbital sander
  • Tack cloth
  • Pre-stain wood conditioner
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Rag
  • Stir stick
  • White wash stain
  • Spray polyurethane sealer

Instructions

    • 1

      Sand the entire piece of furniture to remove the previous finish. Wipe way excess dust with a tack cloth.

      Apply a coat of pre-stain wood conditioner to the furniture and allow the conditioner to penetrate for one to five minutes. Wipe away the excess conditioner with a clean rag.

      Lightly sand the furniture with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth.

      Stir the white wash stain with a stir stick or shake the can before opening.

      Dip a rag into the stain and apply the stain to the furniture in the direction of the wood stain. Allow the stain to penetrate for three minutes. Wipe away any excess stain with a rag.

      Allow the stain to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

      Seal the furniture using an even coat of spray polyurethane.
