How to Apply Antiquing Glaze

Buying authentic antique furniture can be quite expensive. Fortunately, if you like the look of antique furniture, you can give modern furniture pieces an old-world flare using antique glaze. When applied to wooden furniture, antique glaze settles into the cracks in the wood and makes it look older than it really is. Antique glaze is fairly simple to apply and comes in a variety of colors to suit the décor in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface to be glazed. Before you can apply antique glaze, you must first strip off any existing paint. Use sandpaper on the surface that is to be glazed. This will give the glaze a rougher surface to adhere to.

    • 2

Use a brush or a roller to apply a white primer to the furniture. Allow the coat of primer to dry and then sand the piece again. Repeat this process so you have primed and sanded the piece twice.

    • 3

Dip a wadded rag into your antique glaze and begin rubbing it into the surface of the wood. Continue rubbing the glaze into the wood, applying more as needed. If you want a thick coat, apply several layers of glaze. Experiment until you have the desired glazed look.

Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a final top coat to seal in the glaze.
