How to Create a Weathered Table

Many collectors lust after antique furniture for their homes, as these pieces are truly one-of-a-kind. If you like the look of weathered, antique furniture but don’t want to spend the money to buy authentic antiques, it is possible to weather a piece of newer furniture to make it look distressed and worn.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply colored paint to the entire surface of the table, but don’t apply any primer beforehand. This will make it easier to “rough up” the table.

    • 2

Wait until the paint has dried and then use 60-grit sandpaper to rub the table and make it look more rugged. Use the sander more in certain areas, such as the surface or sides of the legs, where it would have experienced more wear and tear.

    • 3

Use a brush to apply a dark stain on the table. Brush it on in a thin coat so the paint underneath shows through. Working in small sections, use a rag to rub off any excess stain.

    • 4

Leave the table to dry overnight. If you want the table to be a bit darker, add a second coat of stain, using a rag to rub away any excess.
