How to Apply Glaze Over Dark Paint

If you painted your walls too dark or just want to change up your dark paint, try using a glaze on your paint. Glazing is an easy faux finish. Glaze requires you to mix a light paint in cream or beige with a glaze. A glaze will add a lighter-textured finish to your dark wall colors. As you glaze you will see your paint strokes. This is how it should look. Your old color will show through. The overall effect is a lighter-textured finish of your original color.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your floors and other surfaces to protect them from the glaze. Use a drop cloth or tarp to cover your furniture and floors. Use tape to cover trim and wall surfaces you do not want to paint.

    • 2

Thoroughly mix the paint and the glaze. You will mix in 1 qt. of the paint to 1 gallon of your glaze. If you desire a more creamy look to your glaze, add up to 1/2 qt. more paint.

    • 3

Apply the mixture to the old paint using a paintbrush. Use medium, random strokes. Do not worry about being perfect.

    • 4

Allow the glaze to dry for 24 hours to be completely dry. If the wall color is not light enough, reapply another coat of glaze and allow another 24 hours to dry.

    • 5

Clean up. Pick up your drop cloth and tape once the paint is completely dry.
