Painting With a Granite-Looking Paint Over Wood

Granite is a durable, igneous rock that is commonly used for countertops and back splashes. Available in a wide variety of colors, each slab of granite is unique. It is generally expensive to install, however. You can simulate the look of granite by using a faux painting technique to paint over wood surfaces. To achieve the best possible faux finished result, it is worth taking the time to study some pieces of granite to determine the effect you want to recreate. Select around six colors and shades of paints in the required color range for your granite, to get a good depth of color.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the wood surface to be painted. Fill any holes, cracks and chips with wood filler and sand the surface with a fine-grade piece of sandpaper.

    • 2

Apply a coat of latex primer with a roller. Allow this to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Apply a base coat of the main color of your granite and allow this to dry.

    • 4

Dab your natural sponge into a lighter shade of your base color paint and dab on the paint, using a light pouncing motion. Allow this to dry thoroughly. Dab another color over some areas of the surface. Remember, granite is not uniform in color.

    • 5

Dip a small paintbrush into another color and flick the paint over the surface, by using a quick wrist action to flick the brush. Allow this to dry, and repeat this process with another color of paint.

    • 6

Dip an artist's fine-tipped paintbrush into another color and paint faint random seam lines. Allow this to dry.

    • 7

Apply a coat of polyurethane sealer over your finished granite surface.
