Natural Ingredients to Store on a Kitchen Wall and Use for Decoration

Numerous natural ingredients are suitable for storing on a kitchen wall by hanging them on a string or incorporating them into a wreath or swag. Natural ingredients add a decorative touch to your kitchen and gourmet flavor to your culinary creations. The key to success with natural ingredients is to make sure they are completely dry so mold does not form. Select an area to hang them that is not greasy or dusty so the natural ingredients remain usable.
  1. Fruits and Vegetables

    • Fruits and vegetables are not as common as some other natural ingredients that store well on a kitchen wall. However, by selecting the right ones and using them within a reasonable period, it is possible to store them on a wall. Fresh citrus fruits make a lovely wreath or swag and add a clean, invigorating scent to the kitchen. Dried tomato slices work well too. Simply crush them and use them as a spice. Ears of corn (especially miniature varieties), small pumpkins, dried peas, apples and a host of other fruits and vegetables work well in wreaths and swags.

    Spices

    • Cinnamon sticks, whole star anise, whole nutmeg, vanilla bean and a number of other exotic spices can be attractive when made into a wreath. It is important to make sure these items were not glued on if you intend to use the spices in your culinary creations. It’s not always easy to look at something and know the mechanics behind the creation of the product. This is where an ingredient list and other pertinent data attached to the item can come in handy. You can make your own wreath or swag at home and use wire or string to attach the items to the wreath base.

    Herbs

    • Herb wreaths, swags and herbal ropes add scent and color to the kitchen wall. Sage, oregano, lemon balm, mint and tarragon often make up the base, with smaller bunches of herbs such as thyme, chives or dill weed heads used throughout the wreath or swag to create interest. Often natural herbal decorations are created using a theme such as Italian herbs. The herbs can be used for dishes other than Italian culinary creations, but it lets Italian food lovers know that the spices included in that decoration are ideal for them.

    Edible Flowers

    • Edible flowers are often incorporated into other wreaths to add color. Pansies, violas, hollyhocks, sunflowers, nasturtiums, calendula and roses are a few examples of edible flowers that look good and taste even better. Make sure the flowers were grown organically, because many of the chemicals sprayed on flowers are toxic. Find out what the wreath base is made of as well. It could be herbs or it could be filler material that is not edible, or it may even be toxic. Making your own natural decorations is the best way to know what is in them and how they were made.
