How to Reuse Metal Roofing

Metal roofing comes in a variety of types. Metal shingles are traditionally used for industrial buildings, though galvanized shingles were in high use from the mid 1800s to the first part of the 20th century. Other types include corrugated steel or a tin roof. If you're able to get salvaged metal roofing, there are a variety of ways to reuse it.

Instructions

    • 1

Re-tile your shower walls using metal shingles to create a rustic yet elegant look. Consult a professional installer for tips on proper installation and sealing.

    • 2

Place the shingles on your countertop or as a backsplash in the kitchen.

    • 3

Cut the shingles, and use them to cover a mirror or picture frame. Paint a high-gloss, clear sealant over the shingles for a glamorous accent piece.

    • 4

Place individual shingles on a folding screen. Paint them a translucent hue for a touch of color, or leave them unfinished for a rustic-chic look.

    • 5

Build a raised planter bed using scraps of corrugated steel or tin. Weed and till the desired growing area. Set four sheets of metal in a rectangle standing on edge to form a box. Pack soil around the bottom to secure the sides of the box. Pour fresh soil and compost in for a pest- and disease-resistant growing space.

Cover the drawers on a nightstand or dresser in metal scraps that are cut to size for a primitive look. Mix materials by using a wood dresser to create contrast. Install vintage knobs and drawer pulls.
