How to Replace Round Faux Stone

If you have used round faux stones in your yard design or pathway and some of them are chipped or broken, you may want to replace them with new round faux stones. Order these stones from online vendors. Keep in mind that you may need to fuse your stones with concrete, mortar or sand -- depending on how you have used your stones in your yard design.
  1. Sand Setting

    • If you have a pathway curving through your front or back yard that is set with sand and faux stones, you can reset the stones by regrading the path with sand. Because sand settles and washes away with rain and snow, you may need to regrade several times a year, depending on the weather. Simply remove all the stones from the path and pour a bag of sand across the path. Use a forged bow rake to smooth out the sand. Place new faux stones in the sand, pressing them down into the sand until it reaches around all sides of the stone. In several weeks, the stones will settle more permanently.

    Fixing Broken Stones

    • Mix water and mortar in a bucket according to package instructions with a mixing drill, which you can rent from a home construction supply store. Dip a trowel in the mixture and apply the mortar to the sides of the broken stones. Piece the stone remnants together so that the mortar fuses the pieces. Scrape away excess mortar with a trowel.

    Cutting Stones

    • Faux stones that are set in concrete already will need to be cut apart with a cut-off concrete saw. You can rent a saw from your local home construction store. Wear protective gear, such as goggles, long-sleeved clothing, a respirator and headphones. Cut the concrete carefully. Further break apart broken stones with a sledge hammer.

    Resetting Concrete

    • Rent a concrete mixer from your local home construction store. Add water, concrete mix and sand according to the machine instructions. Put on goggles and work gloves. Pour the concrete on the path. Spread the concrete with a float so that it is even. Then press the new round faux stones into the concrete. Scrape away excess concrete with a trowel. Allow the concrete to dry.
