DIY Remove Window Leading

“Leading” is the original process of affixing multiple window panels together with lead solder. Lead is no longer considered a safe product for use around the home, so the same effect is created on existing glass with “leading” strips. The strips are self-adhesive and used to create geometric patterns that mimic the original process. Proper removal of the strips is crucial to ensure the glass isn’t scratched or damaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a razor blade into a holder and scraper. Holding the scraper at a 30 degree angle, remove the self-adhesive window leading strips from the window. Razor blade holders are available at home improvement and hardware stores.

    • 2

Continue to carefully scrape off the window leading strips until they and the majority of the adhesive are removed. Spray an all-purpose household cleaner on the window and work it into the adhesive residue.

Examine the window for any remaining adhesive residue. Remove this lingering adhesive with a paper towel and commercial adhesive remover. Work the adhesive remover into the residue until it’s completely eliminated. Clean the window with store-bought glass cleaner.
