How to Measure a Baffle Box Down Comforter

A down comforter can provide natural and lightweight warmth for sleeping. One issue that occurs with down comforters is the shifting of the feathers within the layers of fabric, creating uneven areas of more down here and less down there. A solution to this problem involves fabric baffles sewn between the top and bottom layers of the comforter, segmenting the down into boxes and preventing it from shifting. Measure a baffle box down comforter to ensure it fits your bed properly.

Measure the length of the down comforter with the tape measure from the top edge to the bottom edge. Depending on the amount of hang you wish over the foot of the mattress, choose a comforter with a length at least equal to the length and height of the mattress.

    • 2

Measure the width of the down comforter with the tape measure from the left edge to the right edge. Again, depending on the amount of hang you desire over the left and right sides of the mattress, choose a comforter with a width at least as wide as the width plus the height (times two) of the mattress.

Choose a baffle box down comforter with a fill power of between 750 and 800 for a warm comforter. A lighter comforter can be effective at approximately 600 fill power. The fill power measures the loftiness of the down inside the baffle boxes. Because the baffle boxes help keep the comforter fluffy and lofty, a higher fill power means a fluffier product.
