How to Display Keys in Home Decor

Displaying your collection of keys lends an old-fashioned ambiance to your room decor. Many people collect vintage or unusual keys. Whether you collect skeleton, automobile, jail or other types of keys, displaying them in an interesting way draws attention to them. Suitcase and jewelry box keys are often quite small, while door, jail cell or automobile keys may be several inches long, particularly if they are vintage.

Instructions

Cut a length of narrow ribbon measuring 12 to 36 inches to hang the key in your window. The length depends on your window and how long you want the key to hang down in front of it. Insert one end of the ribbon into the round section of a large key. Tie the ribbon ends together in a knot. Hang the key in the center of a window to draw attention to the large size and design. A clear pushpin is effective in attaching the loop to the window frame.

Display a collection of several keys in a shadow box. These are available in a variety of sizes. Use hot glue to add the keys to the box permanently or hook-and-loop discs with peel-and-stick backing for temporary placement.

    • 3

Hammer small nails into the wall to hang a grouping of keys. Alternate the heights of the keys on the wall to create interest. For instance, you can nail them on the wall in a rectangle or square shape or you can stagger the key heights. Another option is to place the keys horizontally on the wall, by using two or more of the small nails.

Form a loop with gold cording by inserting one end into a hole in the key and tying the ends together in a knot. The length of the cord depends on where you want to hang it. Attach the loop to the center bottom of a window shade to use as a shade pull. Another option is to attach a key to the pull chain on a ceiling fan or drape the loop over a lampshade.

Cut raffia ribbon into a 12-inch length. Thread it in the hole in the key and then tie the raffia ribbon into a bow on the handle of a wicker basket. Allow the key to drape over the outside of the basket.
