Set up a basic metal bed frame, which will provide the base for attaching the headboard. Use a frame designed for your mattress size. Line it up with the wall where your bed will go. Measure from the bolt holes on the frame to the point on the wall where you want the headboard to stop, to determine its height. Measure the width of the bed frame to determine how wide a piece of tin you'll need.
Draw the shape of the headboard onto a sheet of corrugated tin with a carpenter’s pencil, based on your measurements. Use a long piece of wood, such as a 2-by-4, for guidance in drawing straight lines. Make a basic rectangle for a minimalist appearance, or create a distinctive top edge, like scallops or pointed triangles, for something eye-catching.
Clamp each side of the corrugated tin to a separate sawhorse. Tightly secure it into place so it won’t move during the cutting process.
Cut out your outline with a reciprocating saw fitted with a metal-cutting blade. Wear safety gear such as work gloves, ear covers and safety goggles to protect yourself.
Drill starter holes through the base of the headboard where it will attach to the bed frame. Bolt the headboard in place and place it against the wall before adding your mattress to the frame.
