How to Make a Collapsible Room Divider

A collapsible room divider provides a quick and simple method of segmenting a space, whether it’s for temporary privacy or creating a semi-permanent nook. While room dividers take many forms, an advantage to selecting a collapsible one is its ease of storage and portability. Instead of spending lots of money on one, create your own, which you can customize.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three equal sized panels of plywood based on the height and width you want your collapsible room divider. Run fine-grit sandpaper across any rough edges.

    • 2

Apply a layer of high-gloss paint in your color choice to both sides of each plywood panel. Let the paint dry overnight.

    • 3

Place two of the panels on a flat surface such as a work bench or floor. Line them up evenly and leave a tiny gap of no more than 1/2 inch between.

    • 4

Use three hinges to attach the two panels. Place one in the center, one 3 inches from the top and one 3 inches from the bottom. Drill pilot holes at the screw hole locations. Insert screws in the pilot holes and tighten.

Turn the two attached panels over. Line the third panel up and repeat the hinge attaching process. Fold the hinged panels on top of the center panel to collapse. Spread apart and stand up to use.
