How to Decorate Bricks to Fill in a Window

When you have a window that you plan to eliminate, filling in the space with brick may be cheaper and less time consuming than creating an entirely new wall. The brick-filled window creates a distinctive architectural feature. Decorating the bricks makes them stand out even more and turn the former window into an attractive work of art. Wait until the window is bricked in before decorating them.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the appearance of a large collage where the window used to be by decoupaging the bricks. Cut out a collection of paper objects, whether they’re pictures, drawings or even words from a magazine. Attach these to the bricks with glue. Let the glue dry and protect the paper designs to the bricks by covering them with several layers of waterproof sealant.

    • 2

Paint a mural or picture using the bricked-in window as the background. Plan the painting ahead of time by sketching out a basic plan before beginning. Use paints suitable for outdoors. Create a landscape scene, a portrait or even a picture of a window that matches others on the building.

    • 3

Cover the bricks in a layer of chalkboard paint if the former window is a height that’s easy to reach from the ground. Kids or kids-at-heart can draw or write on the space, creating an ever-changing display.

    • 4

Turn each brick into an individual piece of art, which will create an eclectic appearance after completion. Paint anything from a tiny detailed scene on each one to bold patterns and shapes on a small scale.

    • 5

Paint the brick the same color as the rest of the building’s siding if you want the former window to blend in. Use the same paint or go for as close a color match as possible, if the siding isn’t painted.
