How to Antique Wood Picture Frames

Antiquing a wood picture frame means giving it a distressed appearance. This causes the frame to look like it has been handed down for generations. Displaying an old picture of your ancestors or a sepia or black and white photograph in the frame accentuates the look. This type of frame is also suitable for formal or casual photos in a rustic, country or Victorian style home.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the frame from its base and take out the glass. If you cannot remove the glass, line the inside perimeter of the frame with painter's tape. This prevents paint from getting on the glass.

    • 2

Wipe off the wood picture frame with a soft cloth. This removes any dust particles and allows the paint to adhere well.

    • 3

Paint the frame with an acrylic color that you want to show through once the project is finished. Use a craft paint brush to apply the coat of paint. Allow time for it to dry completely.

    • 4

Spread a light coat of wood glue over the wood picture frame with a clean paint brush. Do not allow it to dry.

    • 5

Paint your second paint color choice on the wet glue on the picture frame. Allow this coat to dry well. As the picture frame dries, the paint cracks, giving it an antique finish.

    • 6

Apply another coat of glue to the picture frame. Adding the final coat of wood glue seals the picture frame and protects the paint. Once it is dry, remove the painter's tape, if you used it. Replace the glass in the frame, then insert your picture and the frame into the base.
