How to Hide Bathroom Pumps & Piping in the Basement

A finished basement has a range of possibilities, from a rentable apartment to a home theater. Because of its low location, conventional sewer plumbing doesn’t always work. Installing a pump becomes necessary if you want a bathroom in the basement. Unfortunately, this can mean exposed pipes and a large pump unit. Hiding these can produce a finished look throughout your basement.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the pump unit and exposed pipes on the wall by placing a portable room divider screen in front of them. Fold out the three panels and arrange the divider so it surrounds the pipes or pump, hiding them from view. Choose a screen that fits with your basement décor in terms of color and style.

    • 2

Hide the pump and pipes by placing potted plants around them. Stick to faux plants since most basements do not receive enough natural light for live plants. Use tall, lush plants to cover the narrow pipes and place smaller ones on and around the pump.

    • 3

Hide the pump and pipes in a budget-friendly way by wrapping or draping them with colorful pieces of fabric. Check with your specific pump manufacturer to make sure covering it will not interfere with its function.

    • 4

Create a fabric ceiling in a basement to hide ceiling pipes. Cover the entire ceiling or just the area directly around the pipes. Measure the area and account for the drop of the pipes when cutting a fabric piece. Staple the fabric to the ceiling, letting it hang down for coverage.

    • 5

Build a custom bottomless wooden box to slide directly over the bathroom pump. Measure the pump and cut four sides from plywood. Create a top with hinges for opening when access is necessary. Paint the box to match the walls in the room.

Create three-sided columns for wall pipes or faux beams for ceiling pipes, which slide over to hide them. Paint them to match the pump box.
