How to Attach Wall Hangings to Stucco

Stucco is a Portland cement-based plaster used on interior and exterior wall surfaces. The strong, durable material is typically applied over masonry or concrete, but it may be used over a metal lath over frame construction. Stucco's solid, thick surface has high-impact resistance. Hanging decorative accents on a stucco wall is not as difficult as it may seem if you have the proper tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Carpenter’s level
  • 3/16- or 1/4-inch carbide drill bit
  • Variable-speed electric drill
  • Phillips head drill bit
  • 3/16- or 1/4-inch concrete screws

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a wall hanging in position on the stucco wall. Mark the locations to put screws in the wall using the hanging attachments on the back of the wall hanging as guides.

    • 2

Draw a line connecting the screw locations if you will use more than one screw. Place a carpenter’s level on the line to ensure that the wall hanging will hang straight. Adjust the marks for screw locations if necessary.

    • 3

Attach a 3/16- or ¼-inch carbide drill bit to a variable-speed electric drill. The carbide dril bit's size depends on the size of concrete screw you will use; match the drill bit's size to the screw size.

    • 4

Drill holes into the stucco at the points you marked to place screws. Drill 1/4 inch deeper than the length of the screws you will use.

    • 5

Replace the electric drill's carbide drill bit with a Phillips head drill bit. Drive one concrete screw into each pre-drilled hole using the electric drill.

    • 6

Position the wall hanging on the screws. Repeat the procedure for each wall hanging you want to attach to stucco.
