Hanging items in the nursery with nails is a simple option for lightweight objects, such as small picture frames. First, put a piece of clear, plastic tape on the wall in the spot you plan to insert the nail to prevent the drywall from crumbling when you hammer. Then, either hammer the nail straight into the wall or place a picture hanger flat against the wall and nail it into the wall. Remember to test the item to make sure it is sturdy before before leaving a child unattended near it.
Medium weight objects, such as a large picture frames, can be hung on nursery walls using wall anchors and screws. Drill a hole, hammer in the anchor and insert the screw into the anchor. It is important to use an anchor with the screw as screws inserted directly into drywall can become loose and fall out of the wall over time. If you are uncertain as to whether or not to use a nail or an anchor with a screw, choose the anchor with a screw to be safe.
Heavy items in the nursery, such as shelves or mirrors, must be securely bolted to the wall. There are two options this: expansion anchors or toggle bolts. Determine the weight of the object you want to hang and the thickness of the wall in order to purchase the best anchor or bolt for your item. Then, use a stud finder to locate a wall support to securely install the anchor or bolt. Drill a hole in the wall. Tap the fastener in place using a hammer. Turn the slotted bolt clockwise until you cannot turn it anymore, then pull it out. Slide the bolt through the hanger on the shelf or mirror, then slide the bolt back into the anchor.
Instead of hanging decorative items on the wall, abandon the idea of mounted items and paint a decorative mural instead. Paint something that goes along with the theme of your nursery, such as jungle animals. Or, as an alternative to photos hung on the wall in frames, paint a family tree and tack family photos on the appropriate branches. This is the safest option because there is no chance of a mural falling off the wall.
