How to Make a Stencil for Plaster Work

You can use plaster to create moldings and raised dimensional artwork on walls, ceilings and columns. Of course, doing this by hand can take hours of detailed work, hence, stencils can help you create beautiful craftsmanship without being a trained artist. Once you create the stencil on a Mylar polyester film, you will adhere the sheet to the location of the plaster work and paste the plaster over the stencil with a putty knife.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet of plywood or quilter's cutting mat
  • Stencil design
  • Fine tip permanent marker
  • 14-mil Mylar polyester film
  • Masking tape
  • Small artist's cutting knife

Instructions

    • 1

Place the design on a flat surface such as the plywood sheet or quilter's cutting mat. Tape the Mylar polyester film over it.

    • 2

Trace the stencil design on the polyester film with a permanent marker. Make sure the ink dries for each area you copy before proceeding in order to prevent smudges.

    • 3

Remove the polyester film from the stencil once the ink is dry and tape it to your work area. Cut the design from the polyester film with the small artist's cutting knife to use the stencil for your plaster work.
