How to Decorate a Floral Garland With Tulle

Garlands consist of flowers and other decorative elements that are strung together to allow decorators to ornament and enhance stairways, entryways, arbors, banquet tables and more. Add wispy, elegant touches to garlands by including tulle pompoms in garland arrangements. The white and delicate nature of tulle makes it a well-suited addition in garlands for weddings, anniversaries, proms and other romantic occasions.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a cardboard guide for creating the tulle pompoms using a box cutter. Cut out a circle with a diameter that matches the desired diameter for the pompoms in the garland. Cut a circle in the center to make an O-shape. Make the circle in the center big enough to easily feed tulle through.

    • 2

Trace the O-shape on another piece of cardboard and cut that out. Stack the two cardboard shapes together.

    • 3

Cut a long strip of tulle from a tulle spool. Stuff one end of the tulle through the centers of the stacked O-shapes. Wrap the tulle over and around the outer edges of the O-shapes and back through the centers. Continue wrapping the tulle, gradually working around the entire circle. Cut off the excess tulle once the entire circle is wrapped.

    • 4

Snip the wrapped tulle all along the outer edges of the O-shapes, keeping the tulle pinched and held in place at the center.

    • 5

Pull the two cardboard pieces apart slightly to reveal the tulle that runs through the centers. Tie tight knots between the two cardboard pieces, using string, thread or thin ribbon.

    • 6

Pull off the cardboard pieces and puff up the pompom. Continue making a surplus of pompoms for the garland.

    • 7

Gather the additional elements for the garland. Out of endless possibilities, some include natural flower heads, fake flower heads, hearty natural greenery, fake greenery, beads, charms, ribbon and cranberries.

    • 8

String a needle with a double thread, making the length as long as needed for the garland. Tie a not in the end to create an anchor. Thread the tulle pompoms and additional elements onto the string, creating the desired pattern. Thread the point of the needle through the centers of the elements.

    • 9

Cut the string to remove the needle once the entire length of string is decorated. Tie another knot to secure the other end of the garland.
