How to Make a Faux Tree Headboard

A faux tree headboard will bring a natural element into the room. You can make a faux tree headboard from a sheet of furniture grade plywood as a do-it-yourself project. The outline of a tree silhouette can be cut out from the plywood to create the appearance of a tree headboard in a modern style. The limbs will extend across the wall in a whimsical manner for a striking accent piece at the head of your bed. Furniture grade plywood is ideal because it can be painted, stained or finished with a clear wood finish, just as you would do with a quality piece of furniture.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/4-inch furniture grade plywood (48-by-96 inches)
  • Jigsaw
  • Sanding pad (fine-grit)
  • Spray lacquer
  • Stud finder
  • Pan head wood screws
  • Screw gun

Instructions

    • 1

Place the plywood flat on a work surface so that the long side is vertically oriented. Draw the outline of a tree with limbs extending from a wide trunk on the plywood with a pencil.

    • 2

Cut out the pencil lines to create the faux tree headboard using a jigsaw. Follow along the lines carefully, moving the saw along the surface of the wood just fast enough to allow the blade to cut through the wood until the outline is cut out completely.

    • 3

Sand the cut edges of the plywood until they are smooth using a fine-grit sanding pad.

    • 4

Spray an even coat of spray lacquer onto the plywood headboard cutout. Allow the lacquer to dry four hours and apply a second coat. Wait 24 hours for the second coat to dry before handling.

    • 5

Slide a stud finder along the wall in the selected spot for the headboard. Mark the location of each stud with a pencil.

    • 6

Hold the headboard against the wall. Drive pan head wood screws every 6 to 8 inches through the headboard into the wall at each stud location using a screw gun.
