How to Frame a Mirror With Glass Tile

Before throwing or giving away an old mirror, consider giving it a new look with glass tile. The glass tile acts like a frame or border around the mirror and provides an instant facelift. The project works equally well for mirrors you buy secondhand, as it does for mirrors you already have in your home. Frame your mirror with tile in just a few hours and for a lot less than it would take to replace the mirror with a manufacturer-designed piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a piece of 1/8-inch thick plywood and place on a flat surface. Set your mirror on top of the plywood and mark the edges of the mirror. Mark the border of the mirror on the plywood, which shows how much of a frame you want around the mirror.

    • 2

Trim away the excess plywood, which creates the outside edge of the framed mirror. Using the jigsaw, cut away the wood in the center of the board. This area indicates the placement of the mirror. If you trim the wood properly, then the mirror should slide right inside the hole.

    • 3

Apply a coat of primer to the plywood with a sponge paintbrush. Once the primer dries, follow up with a second coat of primer. When working with glass tiles, a small amount of the background color shines through the tiles.

    • 4

Arrange the glass tiles on the plywood, once the primer completely dries. Make sure that you have enough tiles and that the tiles have no gaps. Coat the plywood with a thin layer of clear adhesive and press the tiles into place. Set the wood to one side, letting the adhesive dry.

Paint the inside edge of the frame with clear adhesive. Gently press the mirror inside the frame, using the adhesive to hold the mirror to the frame. Keep the mirror flat until the adhesive dries and forms a tight bond. Hang the mirror on the wall.
