How to Hang a Small Canvas

Hanging a small but precious piece of canvas art requires not only physically preparing the piece to be mounted on the wall using hanging wire, but also planning your wall space so the canvas gets the attention it deserves. Choose a space just above eye level where it can catch natural light. If you must hang the canvas in a dark corner, consider installing or placing a lamp nearby to illuminate it.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • 2 eye screws, at least 1/2 inch long
  • Woven picture-hanging wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Drill with bits
  • Ruler or T-square
  • 2 picture hooks

Instructions

    • 1

Mark two points, using the pencil, on either side of the canvas back on the wooden support/stretcher bars, about a quarter of the way down from the top of the canvas.

    • 2

Push one eye screw into one of the marked points until the tip pierces the wood, then push and turn the screw into the wood until all the threads are covered. Do not apply pressure to the canvas.

    • 3

Push the other eye screw into the second point, then push and turn until its threads are covered.

    • 4

Thread one end of the picture wire through the right side screw, loop it once, and then wrap the wire around itself several times to secure.

    • 5

Pull the rest of the wire across the back of the canvas and feed the other end of the wire through the left-hand screw.

    • 6

Loop the wire once, ensuring that the wire is neither tight nor flush against the back of the canvas. If necessary, tug the wire so that there is about 1 inch of “give.”

    • 7

Wrap the wire around itself to secure, then cut any excess using the wire cutters.

    • 8

Hold the canvas against the wall in the desired spot and score two light lines, using the pencil, on either side of the canvas, marking the width of the canvas.

    • 9

Mark two dots, each about two inches in from the scored lines. Use the ruler to ensure the dots are even.

    • 10

Drill holes on the dots just wide and deep enough for your picture hooks. Screw in the picture hooks until they are straight and secure.

    • 11

Erase or rub the pencil lines from the wall and hang the canvas on the wall, catching the wire onto the picture hooks.
