DIY Bed Canopy for a Single Bed

Adding a canopy to a single bed instantly transforms the room and turns the bed into a cozy sleeping space. Making your own bed canopy lets you customize the colors and fabric texture to match with the bedding and overall room décor. Thick velvet creates a regal appearance while sheer tulle is reminiscent of a fairy tale. Create the canopy with items found at most fabric outlets or craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the floor to the ceiling in the room where you’ll install the single bed canopy. Add 2 feet to the number, which will account for the bed’s width to create a draped effect.

    • 2

Cut four strips of fabric in your style of choice. Match the length to your measurements and make the width of each strip approximately 2 feet.

    • 3

Open an embroidery hoop that’s 10 inches in diameter and separate the two rings.

    • 4

Cut two strips of decorative ribbon that match the canopy fabric colors. Make each ribbon approximately 28 inches long. Tie each one on opposite sides of the hoop's inner ring. Tie the other end of the ribbons together to form a bow.

    • 5

Fold 3 inches of each fabric strip over the outer ring of the hoop. Re-insert the inner hoop and tighten to hold the strips in place.

    • 6

Mount a pot-rack hook into the ceiling at the center point of the single bed’s head. Place the bow over the pot rack hook to hang the canopy. Arrange each fabric strip so it drapes evenly across the sides and head of the bed.
