How to Make a Fabric Sample Ring

Interior designers or decorators often use fabric sample rings to show clients what types and patterns of fabrics are available. By putting all available samples on a ring, you can easily access fabrics. A grommet binder is ideal, as it punches a hole in the fabric and a book ring easily loops through the grommet. To keep the fabric samples organized on the ring, order the fabrics by colors first, then patterns. A fabric sample ring is also helpful if you’re doing your own decorating or sewing project to quickly reference personal fabric choices.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4 inch by 4 inch square of each fabric sample.

    • 2

Write the name of the fabric on the back side of each fabric piece.

    • 3

Set the grommet maker to the size of your grommets. The label on the grommet package should say the size with which you are working.

    • 4

Insert a corner of the fabric, about ½ an inch from either edge, into the grommet maker and press to create a hole in the fabric.

    • 5

Remove the fabric and set a washer on the grommet maker on the bottom platform. Set the washer right side up so the sides curve up.

    • 6

Place the grommet into the fabric, right side up. Move the fabric swatch into the grommet maker so that the grommet is evenly lined with the washer.

    • 7

Press the grommet maker to bring the washer and grommet together. Once you’re done, you’ll have a hole in the fabric sample that you can easily slip a book ring through.

    • 8

Repeat steps 4 through 7 until all of your fabric samples have grommets.

    • 9

Organize the fabric samples in the order you desire.

    • 10

Loop the ring through the grommets and clasp the ring together to finish the fabric sample ring.
