How to Decorate a Cutting Board With Vinyl Lettering

Cutting boards are useful tools in the kitchen, allowing you to slice things without worry that you’ll damage the countertop surface. However, most cutting boards aren’t designed with aesthetic appeal in mind. Many are plain, lacking any kind of decoration. Vinyl letters will allow you to spell out short words or phrases on the cutting board to add a modern, decorative appeal to this kitchen essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the cutting board. Dry it with a towel and set it aside to air-dry completely.

    • 2

Turn the cutting board over and run a lint-free cloth over the back to remove any dust, which interferes with the vinyl letter adhesion. Because vinyl letters would be damaged by cutting, only apply them to the back of the cutting board.

    • 3

Arrange the vinyl letters on the surface of the cutting board. Make adjustments until you find the design that you prefer. Apply a line of masking tape beneath the letters to serve as a guide for creating a straight line.

    • 4

Peel the backing away from the vinyl letters and press them into place. For vinyl letters that don’t include adhesive, coat the back of each letter with urethane glue and press it into the proper position.

    • 5

Press a piece of heavy cardboard against the letters to squeeze out any air bubbles.

    • 6

Apply a coat of clear varnish over the bottom of the cutting board to protect the letters.
