How to Make Flower Arrangements Using Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are among the simplest and easiest flowers with which to create breathtaking arrangements. Appearing in shades of green, blue, pink, white and purple, these large blooms, which are easily available year-round, add a bold splash of color to the table. To create a professional-looking arrangement, stick with blooms in the same color or use those belonging to the same color family. A cluster of hydrangeas also adds a mild, sweet scent to the space where it is placed.

Instructions

  1. Round Arrangement

    • 1

Lay a tropical Ti leaf face down on a table, so its vertical spine faces upward. Insert the tip of a sharp knife into a corner of the spine and slice it along the length of the leaf to remove it. Work carefully so you do not damage the leaf. Removing the spine makes the leaf easier to curl. Remove the spine from the second tropical Ti leaf in the same manner.

    • 2

Curl one Ti leaf to form a cylindrical shape, with its shiny surface facing outward. Lower the leaf in a clear or frosted glass bowl and release it. The leaf conforms to the contours to the bowl. Repeat the process with the second leaf, so they both cover the inside of the bowl.

    • 3

Stand a hydrangea stem next to the bowl to measure its height so you know how much to cut. Nick the stem over the desired point before you sever it completely with a sharp knife. Form a 45-degree cut through the stem so it takes in more water. Remove the foliage from the stem with your fingers.

    • 4

Pour water into the bowl until it is halfway full. Center the hydrangea stem into the bowl before lowering it. Fluff the flowers of the hydrangea so it covers the opening of the bowl. If required, insert another hydrangea into the container to completely cover its opening.

    Square Arrangement

    • 5

Place a wide-mouthed, square glass vase on a table and fill it with white or colored marbles or glass stones until it is one-third full. Use marbles or stones that complement the colors of the hydrangeas you wish to use. Pour water into the vase until it is halfway from the top.

    • 6

Stand a hydrangea stem against the vase to determine how tall you want to cut it. Using a sharp knife or scissors, cut this central stem at an angle. Cut the remaining stems identical in length.

    • 7

Insert a stem diagonally in the vase, pushing it slightly so its lower end penetrates the layer of marbles or stones that hold it in place. Insert another stem diagonally in the vase, but in the opposite direction. Step back and view to ensure their tops are at the same level.

    • 8

Add another stem or two of hydrangeas in the vase so the arrangement is well-rounded and dome-shaped. Depending on personal preference, use hydrangeas in the same color or use a central flower in a bold shade and surround it with lighter shades.
