How to Make Shabby Chic Fabric Flowers

  Cut shabby fabric into 8-by-1-inch strips. Tear the fabric into strips, if you desire, to make it appear even more worn. Six strips are all that is necessary, but use eight if you want the flower to have more petals.

  Form a loop with each strip and press it down on a flat work surface. The loose ends should meet together on the bottom center of the strip.

  Repeat this with all the strips, placing the loose ends in the center. Set them on top of each other so they resemble spokes on a wheel.

  Thread a needle with the coordinating thread. Knot the ends of the threads together.

  Grasp the daisy in the center with the thumb and index finger of your non-dominant hand.

  Go up through the center of the daisy flower with the needle until the knot catches on the back.

  Slip the needle through a hole in the back of a button that coordinates with the material. It doesn't matter if the button has two or four holes.

  Push the needle back down one of the button holes and through the center of the daisy. Repeat going up and down through the center of the fabric and the button holes until the petals and button are secure.

  End the shabby chic flower by going back through the material, tying the thread in a knot next to the bottom of the daisy and clipping the thread with a pair of scissors. Now the shabby chic flower is ready to glue onto a craft or use in other projects.

Pointed Petals Flower

  Draw a star shape on a piece of cardboard. Make the shape as large or small as you want. For a realistic looking flower, make it approximately 5 to 7 inches tall and wide.

  Cut out the star shape with scissors.

  Place the cardboard template on shabby chic fabric and trace around it with a pencil or chalk. Repeat this until you have four to six shapes.

  Cut out the star shapes on the fabric.

  Stack the star shapes on top of each other. Rotate the pointed edges so they are staggered. This gives the flower many different petals.

  Grab the fabric stack at the center of the flowers. Poke a hole into the center with a sharp knife or the pointed end of the scissors. The hole only needs to be large enough for a piece of florist wire to go through it.

  Cut a piece of green florist wire 8 to 10 inches long with wire cutters.

  Thread one end of the florist wire up through the hole in the bottom of a covered button. Use a large button that is approximately 1 inch in diameter. Yellow, white, green, brown or black covered buttons work well for the center of the flower.

  Twist the short end of the wire around itself underneath the button hole. This secures it for the flower center.

  Push the long end of the florist wire through all the petals of the shabby chic flowers. Leave a 2-inch section of wire between the covered button and the fabric stack. Don't pull it all the way through.

  Gather the fabric together with your fingers underneath the covered button. This causes the petals to stand up to resemble a flower.

  Wrap the long end of the florist wire around the gathered fabric to hold it tightly together. This leaves the covered button where you can still see it inside the petals.
