How to Decorate Rattan Hand Fans for a Wedding

Rattan hand fans are sturdier than paper fans and useful as wedding favors or decor. They are inexpensive and available at discount, dollar and hobby and craft stores. Adding embellishments to the hand fan enables it to complement the colors of the wedding. They are useful to decorate the end of pews, walls or to present as a gift to the guests who attend the event.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap fabric ribbon around the handle of the fan. Attach it with a hot glue gun and then cut the ribbon with scissors once the handle is covered.

    • 2

Cut the stems of the silk flowers with a wire cutter. The length of the stem depends on the size of the fan. The goal is to have the top of the silk flowers extend to the middle section of the rattan fan. Use one single flower for a small fan or more for a larger fan. If decorating a larger fan, use one or two large flowers with filler flowers or greenery.

    • 3

Stagger the flowers so that the heights are different. For instance, if you are using two silk tulips to decorate the fan, place one about 1/2 inch to 1 inch beneath the other. Add filler flowers, such as statice or baby's breath, or greenery, such as ivy, on either side.

    • 4

Cut the netting or tulle in large, triangle shapes to provide a background for the silk flowers if you desire. The size depends on the fan and the flowers. The goal is for the widest section of the fabric triangle to extend beyond the top of the tallest flower by 1 inch to 2 inches.

    • 5

Gather the silk stems in a bunch along with the netting or tulle. Wind green florist tape around the fabric and stems to hold them together. Do this starting at the end and continue to the base of the lowest flower. Cut the tape and press it to the stems.

    • 6

Lay the wrapped flower stems along the handle of the fan. Glue the flowers to the handle and fan with the hot glue gun.

    • 7

Cut a 12-inch length of ribbon and tie a bow around the handle and the flower stems. Do this where the handle meets the wider section of the rattan fan.
