How to Decorate the House With Longaberger Baskets

The Longaberger Company has been in the business of making baskets to decorate homes since 1973. It is based in Newark, Ohio. If used in the right way, the baskets add to the style and personality in each room of your house. Baskets range in size from very small -- those that hold tea, crackers and berries -- to large baskets that are useful as hampers, picnic baskets and for other needs. They come in a wide range of colors and wood tones that add functional decor to every room in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a Longaberger basket that contains nearly the same wood tone as the furniture in the room. For instance, if your living room has whitewashed oak furniture, choose the lighter-colored baskets. If the dining room table is a rich mahogany or another dark shade, choose a darker wood basket to complement and add unity to the decor.

Use the seasonal baskets in your home decor. If your bedroom has touches of pink or burgundy in the bedding, select a Longaberger basket with the burgundy wood trim running throughout the weave. They are available with just one or two strips of burgundy or with the color interwoven throughout the basket. Seasonal colors are available in blue, green, gold and other shades.

Use a liner in your basket if you are using it for food, such as bread, berries, tea or crackers. These liners are custom-made to fit many of the baskets the company offers. Choose a liner fabric that complements the decor in your kitchen or dining room area. The liners are machine washable and prevent crumbs and stains in the basket weave.

Set small or large baskets on bookshelves, end tables, bedroom dressers and anywhere else to hold odds and ends, round items and other objects you don't want cluttering the area.

    • 5

Hang a Longaberger basket on the wall by using a decorative hook to hold it by the handle, or attach a picture frame hook on one side or the bottom. This adds an old-fashioned appeal to country- and rustic-style homes.

Spread a cloth napkin, bandanna, colorful linen handkerchief, lace doily or other fabric in the basket before filling it with objects. This gives it a vintage charm, and the cloth helps it match the other decor in the room. This enables you to provide unity to the basket with the room colors and theme. For instance, if you have a rustic-looking kitchen in red and dark gray colors, a red bandanna adds to the country ambiance. If the basket is for a Victorian bedroom, a lace doily or vintage handkerchief provides unity to the area. Use a cloth that is large enough to drape over both ends for the most attractive look.
