How to Add and Sew a French Seam to a Pillow

French seams are professional-looking seams that enclose any fabric that might fray within the seam. If you don’t have a serger or an overlock machine, a French seam can help you create neat and professional looking pillows for home use. Since the French seam encases loose fabric, you’ll have to add an extra 2 inches to your pillow measurement so the pillow is large enough when you finish it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pieces of fabric for the pillow right side out and pin them together.

    • 2

Sew the pieces of fabric together with a quarter-inch seam and a straight stitch. Leave a 6-inch gap of fabric unsewn so you can stuff the pillow later.

    • 3

Iron the seams flat. Trim off about half the seam to make them even and iron the seams flat into the fabric.

    • 4

Turn the pillow inside out and iron the seams flat again.

    • 5

Sew over the seams with a 3/8-inch seam with a straight stitch. Iron the seams flat.

    • 6

      Turn the pillow right-side out.
