Look at the color of the bricks in the fireplace. If they're white, then formal and elegant decor is a wise option. White brick also goes well with a country style or a nautical look. Bricks may feature a deep red, gold, peach or a combination of other colors. Use a complementary wall paint in the den in either a cool or warm shade, depending on the brick color.
Hang a large picture, mirror or wrought iron wall hanging above the fireplace mantel. This provides balance to the fireplace. If the area is formal, a mirror is a wise choice. Wrought iron works well with country, rustic or Southwestern styles. The decor above the fireplace should complement the paint and other decor in the room.
Position your couch -- or the largest piece of furniture -- opposite the fireplace if it's the focal point in the den. Arrange other furniture pieces so they angle toward the fireplace as well. This enables family and guests to enjoy the colorful, crackling fire during cool winter evenings.
Set candles, lanterns, sculptures or other tall items at either end of the mantel. These items will provide a frame for the decor above the fireplace and create unity.
Place a large, silk floral arrangement, sculpture or a potted palm in front of the fireplace opening when it's too warm to use the fireplace. Or try a decorative fireplace screen or a fireplace candelabra.
Position a couple of comfortable chairs angled near your brick fireplace if it's not the focal point in the den. A media center with a TV is often the central view in a den area. Creating a sitting area near the fireplace enables people to enjoy the warmth of the fire while reading or doing other activities.
