How to Decorate a Long Narrow Basement

Basements are sometimes challenging to decorate because they often have lower ceilings, less lighting and a higher probability of leaks. However, leaving a basement undecorated wastes a space in your home that could serve various purposes. If your basement is long and narrow, your furnishing options are further limited, but the decorating will improve the basement's appearance for both people in the home and guests who stay there.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls of the basement a light color. Lighter colors tend to make rooms look larger and conversely, dark colors make rooms more suffocating. Therefore, the lighter color helps open up the narrow basement and gives it a larger appearance.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the basement with a tape measure to determine how much space you have to work with. The width is especially important with a narrow basement so you know if you can fit a table, chairs or other furnishings.

    • 3

Lay down carpeting, if there isn't any already, to insulate the basement a bit more and to make it more welcoming to people in the space.

    • 4

Hang photos, paintings and banners along the walls to brighten and give them a more pleasing appearance. Banners are useful for narrow rooms because they are longer, so they fit well with the shape of the room.

Add furniture if you have the space to accommodate it. Measure the furniture ahead of time and compare it to the dimensions of your basement to ensure it will fit comfortably.
