How to Make a Tassel on a Knitting Machine

A tassel is a type of fabric that is made of loosely hanging thread or other cords. It is knotted at one end and is often used for decoration. Tassels are found on graduation caps and as ornaments hanging from curtains. They are usually between 6 and 12 inches in length. Tassels can be knit with a knitting machine. Before you can make the tassel with a knitting machine, you have to make the proper preparations and make the tassels before you can knit them together.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a piece of cardboard of the height you want the tassel to be. Wrap yarn around the width of the cardboard. Continue wrapping it until the desired thickness of the tassel has been achieved. This will vary, depending on personal preference.

    • 2

Tie the short yarn tightly around the cardboard. Slide scissors between the cardboard and the yarn. Cut the untied side of the yarn off. Bind the neck of the tassel with another piece of yarn and knot it tightly.

    • 3

Bind the neck of the tassel with another piece of yarn and tightly knot it in place. Trim the ends of the tassel with scissors to get a neat and professional-looking tassel. Repeat the process for another tassel. Verify they are the same size and the desired thickness before you knit them together.

To knit the two tassels together on a knitting machine, you need to set the knitting machine up on a flat surface. Push the carriage release button on the back of the knitting machine to lift the carriage up and locate the needles on the inside. The carriage is the top of the knitting machine. Move the needles to the "B" position on the knitting machine. Arrange the needles so there are 20 on each side of the center.

    • 5

Pull the carriage back across the needle bed and lock it into place. Line up the two tassels so one is on top of the other. The order does not matter, as both sides will be visible once it is complete. Turn on the knitting machine and run the two individual tassels through the machine until they are stitched together.

Move the carriage across the knitting machine to run the tassels through. Push the tassels in one side of the machine and out the other until they have come completely through and they are stitched together.
