How to Make a Handmade Fabric Wall Organizer

Making a fabric wall organizer yourself allows you to personalize it to the theme of the room, whether it is a bedroom, office or other area. Choose a fabric in a print or color that coordinates with the upholstery or bedding in the room for a custom look. An inexpensive organizer takes only an hour or two of your time and no sewing or artistic skills. Since the organizer is handmade, you can create pockets suited to the items you need to store.

  • Foam sheet (large enough for the organizer)

Instructions

    • 1

Glue one or two sawtooth picture hangers to the back edge of the rigid foam sheet about 4 inches down from the top. Do this with the craft glue. This allows you to hang the wall organizer once it is complete. Stick straight pins in the holes on the picture hangers. This provides extra support if you are making a large wall organizer.

    • 2

Cut the fabric so it is large enough to cover the front and sides of the foam sheet plus 2 inches extra. This allows you to fold the fabric to the back.

    • 3

Spread craft glue formulated for polystyrene foam generously over the front side of the foam sheet. Do this with your fingertips or a foam craft brush.

    • 4

Place the fabric over the foam sheet so it is centered. Smooth the fabric with your fingers to remove any wrinkles or air bubbles. Wait for the glue to dry.

    • 5

Flip the foam sheet and fabric over on your work surface. Squirt a stream of the glue along the perimeter of the back of the foam -- approximately 1 inch down from the edge. Fold the fabric to the back of the foam sheet. Create folds at each corner with the fabric so it lays neatly. Secure the fabric with safety pins if you desire. Let it dry.

    • 6

Turn the wall organizer back over so the front side is facing up. Determine how many pockets you want on the organizer and what sizes are necessary. If the wall organizer is for an office you may decide to have narrow vertical pockets that hold pens, pencil, rulers and other supplies. If it is for a child's bedroom, larger pockets may be necessary to hold colorful stuffed animals and other toys.

    • 7

Measure the pockets on the coordinating fabric with a ruler and add 1/2 inch around all the edges. The pockets may be rectangle or square shaped -- depending on what you plan to store inside them. Mark the measurements with a piece of chalk.

    • 8

Cut out the pockets with a pair of sharp scissors. Lay them on a work surface with the wrong side up -- the dullest side.

    • 9

Fold the edges down 1/2 inch, making neat corners as you go. Glue the folded fabric with the craft glue. Use safety pins if necessary while the glue is drying. Allow the pockets to dry.

    • 10

Attach the pockets to the fabric wall organizer with the craft glue but leave the top edge open. Repeat this with all the pockets placing them wherever you desire. Allow time for the pockets to dry completely before hanging up the wall organizer.
