How to Decorate a Treasure Chest With Flowers for a Fireplace

Wood, metal or plastic treasure chests are perfect to set on or near a fireplace hearth to add decor to the space. Adding a floral design to the chest softens the look and allows it to coordinate with the colors and style in the room. Silk flowers may catch fire if a burning ember pops out from the fireplace, but decoupaged flowers add floral design to the chest without this danger.

Instructions

    • 1

Dust the treasure chest with a soft cleaning cloth. This allows the decoupaged flowers to adhere to the surface well.

    • 2

Cut out pictures of flowers from magazines or greeting cards or print some out from your computer. Use sharp scissors to cut them out. Find as many pictures as it takes to cover the area you desire. Some people may want a collage of flowers on the top center only, while others may enjoy a sprinkling of flowers all other the surfaces of the treasure chest.

    • 3

Place your cutouts on the treasure chest wherever you desire. Overlap them if you want to create a bunch of flowers in one area or cover the entire surface. Another idea is to put random flowers all over the chest. Once you decide on the most pleasing arrangement, remove the cutouts.

    • 4

Dip the foam craft brush into the decoupage glue. Use a generous layer to cover the entire back of one cutout.

    • 5

Press the flower cutout onto the treasure chest. Smooth any air bubbles or creases with your fingertips. Repeat, applying the decoupage glue and pressing each cutout into place until you obtain the look you desire.

    • 6

Wait for the decoupage glue to dry thoroughly on the cutouts.

    • 7

Sand over the decoupage flowers lightly with the 400 grit sandpaper. Dust off any debris with the cleaning cloth.

    • 8

Apply another generous coat of the decoupage glue over the entire treasure chest. This adds a shiny finish and protects and seals the flower cutouts. Add as many coats as you want to increase the glossy look. Always allow each coat of decoupage glue to dry before adding another one.
