How to Decorate With Rattan & Glass Shelves

Decorating with glass and rattan shelves provides a tropical look and feel to your home. Rattan furnishings are appropriate wherever you desire a casual, relaxed look. This type of decor is often seen in cottage or beach homes. Although it has a flimsy-looking appearance, rattan is actually flexible and tough. The combination of the rattan and glass adds a natural, clean look to your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Stagger the decor on the rattan and glass shelves. For instance, place three objects on one shelf, with one at either end and one in the center. On the next shelf up, use two objects and place them so they are above the empty spaces on the first shelf. Repeat this on each glass shelf. This prevents the shelves from looking messy and cluttered, which detracts from the relaxed ambiance of the rattan and glass.

    • 2

Pick knickknacks that exude an outdoorsy or nautical feel. For instance, set a collection of miniature lighthouses, seashells, beach glass or a bottle in a ship on the shelf. Choose items from nature, such as a collection of polished rocks, a piece of driftwood or even a discarded nest with faux bird eggs inside it.

Decorate the rattan and glass shelves with items that are narrow, pastel colored or made of colored glass. Bulky decor or dark colors detract from lightweight look of the shelves.

    • 4

Display a collection of snow globes on the rattan and glass shelves. The round glass globes add to the transparent appearance of the shelves. Many people buy these as souvenirs during their travels and they reflect different statues and architecture, such as the Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty.
