How to Frame Decorative Nooks in a Wall

Adding a decorative frame around your wall nook or niche draws attention to this architectural feature in your home. Wall nooks often come with crown molding or a plastic or molded plaster framing, but these are generally in the same color as the nook. Therefore, to draw the eye to the nook, it's important to add color or texture around the space. This is not an arduous task, even if you don't have artistic skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a stencil of a trailing ivy or grapevine design. Other options are small stencils that work well with the objects inside the nook, such as fruit stencils in a kitchen or dining room area. Simply attach the stencil to the wall with painter's tape. Apply acrylic paint in the design with a craft paintbrush and wait for it to dry. Remove the stencil, and the design effectively frames the nook. It may be necessary to repeat the design to form an arch shape over the nook or to paint it along the entire perimeter.

Add a floral swag along the arch or top of the nook. This frames the top section, thus drawing the eye visually to the area. Hang the swag with a nail in the wall above the top of the nook.

Apply the same wallpaper border along the ceiling in the room as a frame for the nook. Other options are wall decals with peel-off backing.

Paint horizontal and vertical stripes around the nook to form a square or rectangle frame. Use painter's tape to create the stripes, and fill in the space with acrylic paint. Remove the tape once the paint is dry.
