How to Make Sure a Comforter Will Fit in a Duvet

A duvet cover is an ideal solution when you have a plain comforter or when you want to update your bedroom décor without investing in a new comforter. Duvet covers, available in an endless variety of colors, patterns and fabrics, protect comforters while adding color and style to your bedroom decor; they easily slip on and off for quick changes and washing. However, because manufacturer standards for comforter and duvet cover sizes vary slightly, and the items can shrink in the wash, items with the same size name; i.e, king or queen, will not always fit together. You can check the sizes before buying, though, to avoid disappointment.

Instructions

Confirm the dimensions of the comforter. If you’re buying a new comforter, the dimensions will appear on the packaging or in the product description if you’re ordering from a catalog or an online seller. If you’re covering an existing comforter, measure the length and width to the nearest inch.

Check the dimensions of the duvet cover. Like comforters, manufacturers generally list the dimensions on the packaging or package description. You could measure the duvet yourself if necessary.

Compare the dimensions. In general, the comforter should be within two inches -- bigger or smaller -- than the duvet cover in both length and width. Any larger or smaller and the duvet will not fit properly.
