Tacking a Cover to a Circular Chair Seat

Cover a circular chair seat without using any tools more elaborate than scissors and a hammer. Upholstery tacks have a strong point so they can be hammered into wood without breaking. Choose a sturdy fabric with a fairly tight weave to serve as a seat cushion cover, because loosely woven fabric will pull apart with multiple uses. Use the same method to cover the seat of a circular stool.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seat, if it is removable.

    • 2

Remove the existing cover if it has piping or trim. Leave a plain cover and any padding in place.

    • 3

Measure straight across the chair seat from the bottom of the edge on one side to the same point on the other side. Measure across the seat at the widest point.

    • 4

Add 2 inches to this measurement and cut a circle of tightly woven upholstery fabric this diameter.

    • 5

Lay the fabric right side down on a flat surface. If you could not remove the chair seat, place the fabric on a table and hang the back of the chair off the edge. Place the chair or the chair seat on the fabric. Adjust the fabric until the top of the seat is centered on the fabric circle.

    • 6

Pull the edge of the fabric up over the seat on one side so the edge of the fabric is 1 inch inside the outside edge of the bottom of the seat. Tap in an upholstery tack halfway between the edge of the seat and the edge of the fabric. Do not drive the tack all the way in.

    • 7

Pull up the fabric on the opposite side of the seat and drive a tack into it in the same way. Tap in two more tacks halfway between the first two tacks in the same way, pulling the fabric tight each time.

    • 8

Drive four more tacks into the seat halfway between each of the tacks you have already put in. If necessary, remove the four original tacks and tighten the fabric. When the fabric is tight all around, hammer the tacks in completely.

    • 9

Fold the fabric between the tacks into small pleats and hammer in tacks to hold the pleats in place. Place the tacks 1/4 inch apart.
