Repurposing a Quilt

In many cases, a quilt is an heirloom that is handmade and passed from generation to generation. Quilts might become worn and threadbare or even stained over time. They could be thrown out, but that would end their legacy. Instead of eliminating an old quilt from your life, repurpose it and give it a new life. There are a number of things that an old quilt can be made into with a bit of effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a quilt up based on a pattern for a teddy bear, sew it up and make a new friend that you can pass on to the children in your family. Accent the quilted teddy bear with button eyes and a button nose, and tie a bit of ribbon of raffia around its neck to give it an old-fashioned country look.

    • 2

Display pieces of a quilt in your home to keep it around forever. Decide on a frame size and cut enough material from a quilt to fill the inside of a black or white picture frame matte. Preserve the quilt pieces behind glass to make them last longer.

    • 3

Cut old quilts apart and refinish the edges of the fabric to make smaller quilts for a baby. Display the quilt in a baby's nursery by hanging it over furniture or by hanging it on a wall. Allow your baby to use the quilt to keep warm with it if the fabric is in good enough shape.

    • 4

Line baskets, trunks or wooden storage boxes with pieces of an old quilt to serve a few different purposes. The quilt will protect the wood, provide a stylish look, and allow you to keep fragile items safer.

    • 5

Cut pieces from an old quilt and make them into pillow cases or decorative pillows that can be used to decorate different areas in your home.

    • 6

Make keepsake ornaments out of old quilts in the shape of pine trees, birds, and circles. Cut pieces from the quilt, sew a backing onto them, and attach raffia or colorful ribbon to hang them from. Display the ornaments around your home or save them to use as Christmas tree ornaments.
