How to Make a Birch-Bark Birdhouse Roof

If you're making a birdhouse for actual birds or just for decoration, birch bark can offer a simple solution to making the roof. Birch bark's flexibility can bend over the pitch of the roof in one piece so that you can create the roof without having to measure and cut two pieces of wood at certain angles. Use birch bark to create a simple but effective roof for your birdhouse.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Hot-glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from one side of the face of the birdhouse to the other side, placing the measuring tape over the pitch of the roof. This will give you the length that the birch bark needs to be to cover the roof.

    • 2

Measure from the front of the birdhouse to the back to determine how wide the roof needs to be.

    • 3

Draw a rectangle onto a sheet of birch bark with a pencil. Draw it so that it's 1 inch longer than the length measurement you took, and 1 inch wider than the width measurement.

    • 4

Cut out the rectangle with a utility knife. Use caution and cut away from yourself as you cut each side.

    • 5

Apply a bead of hot glue along the left side of the roof, which includes the front, back and left sidewall. Leave the right side wall -- and the roof to the right side of the peak of the roof -- clear.

    • 6

Press the birch bark rectangle in place over the left side of the roof so that 1/2 inch hangs over the walls all the way around. Allow the glue to dry and cool for about five minutes.

    • 7

Apply a bead of hot glue to the top of the right side wall and the right side of the roof.

    • 8

Gently pull the birch bark that protrudes up past the peak down, bending it at the peak and pressing it into the glued edges on the right side. Hold it in place for about five minutes to let the glue set, cool and form a bond to hold the birch bark in place.
