How to Make a Hinged Picture on a Wall

If you like the look of hinged photographs and art, then you may be wondering how you can put it on display on your wall. Prop hinged artwork onto shelves that you install on the wall. This works especially well if you have lightweight hinged artwork. Use shelves that have pre-carved holes on the backs of them for easy and quick installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Hinges (the hinges should be smaller or the same width as the borders of your frames)
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Nails (regular or drywall nails depending on the material of your wall)
  • Hammer
  • Shelves

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two pieces of artwork in wooden frames of identical size on a flat workspace. Turn them over. Measure the width of the sides of the frame. This will determine the size of the hinges you use. The hinge width should be the same width as borders of the frame or smaller.

    • 2

Attach a hinge at the top and the bottom of the sides of the frames, which should be side-by-side, by using a screwdriver and screws that fit the openings in the hinges.

    • 3

Turn the frames back over and stand them upright. They should be attached together with the hinges.

    • 4

Place a ruler against the wall. Draw a straight line directly onto the wall using a pencil.

    • 5

Place a level against the line to make sure the line is straight and even. You will know that the line is straight and even by looking at the middle dial on the level. The bubble in the dial should be floating in the middle.

    • 6

Measure the distance from the right and left back sides of the shelf all the way to the carved holes on the back of the shelf. Let us say that this distance is 3 inches on each side. Measure 3 inches from the left and right ends of the line on the wall. This is where you will insert your nails. Keep in mind that if your walls are made of drywall, then you will need to use drywall nails, which essentially are nails that look like screws, instead of regular nails.

Hammer a nail at each 3-inch mark. Hook the shelf on the nails. Place the hinged photo on the shelf.
